MacKinlay was in charge of the Hudson Bay Company's establishment at Resolution, near the Great Slave Lake, when he joined Pike's expedition. The purpose of the trip was to investigate the possibility of trading with the Eskimos in the area. In 1902 MacKinlay joined another expedition, accompanying E.A.
